The County Assessor and his staff are responsible
for identifying, classifying, and valuing all real
property and some classes of personal property within
the boundaries of the county for ad valorum taxation
purposes.
Each assessment period begins on January
2nd of each year for computing the taxes which will
be payable the following year. Appeals of the Estimated
Market Values and classifications are heard at the
Local Board of Appeal and Equalization (LBAE) meetings
or open book meetings for each local jurisdiction during
the second half of April. Only appeals to the Local
Boards are eligible to continuance to the County Board
of Appeal and Equalization (CBAE) on the second Tuesday
in June.
So-called mid-year homestead applications
are accepted any time up to December 15th for the period
between January 1st and December 1st, also for taxes
payable the following year. Quintile and new construction
inspections are generally made between early summer
and late winter for the new assessment year.
